Sister Oda B. “Peggy” Chambers, born on August 9, 1932 in Greensboro, Alabama, passed away on June 3, 2023, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren. After marrying Columbus Chambers, Oda relocated to Gary, Indiana where the couple were blessed with three children: Gloria Rena, Anita Marie Dean (Larry), and Larry Gene (Naomi).
Oda served as a Home Economics teacher in the Gary Public Schools System for many years before retiring. Her love for gardening, sewing, and baking, especially homemade rolls and world-class pound cakes, were well-known. As a beloved member of the First Baptist Church congregation in Gary, Indiana for over fifty years, and a devoted wife and mother, Oda was affectionately known as “Peggy.” She was a caring, humorous woman of God who never hesitated to extend a helping hand. Her many jokes and sayings will be remembered fondly by those close to her.
In addition to her parents Robert and Lela Burroughs, Oda was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus Chambers; her brothers, Willie Miles, Allie Miles, Charles Burroughs, and Robert Burroughs; and her sisters, Mattie Rookard, Josephine Jones, and Lela Daniel.
Oda leaves behind her three children, her sister Hattie Porter, her grandchildren Marcus Dean, Elizabeth Chambers, and Benjamin Chambers, her great-grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her legacy as a woman of virtue and her loving presence will be deeply missed.
A celebration of the life and legacy of Sister Oda B. “Peggy” Chambers was held on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. The service took place at Willow Springs Baptist Church on County Road 32, Greensboro, Alabama 36744. The service was presided over by Rev. Calvin Johnson, Church Pastor, and Rev. Jerry Chambers as the officiant.
