A Greensboro mother and her three young children who had been missing for three weeks have been found safe, the Hale County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday, July 12.
Cayla Hummel, 31, was last seen June 22 in the area of Millwood Road in Greensboro, along with her three children: Sirius Richardson, 6; Abram Richardson, 4; and Luna Richardson, 20 months.
According to the sheriff’s office, Hummel was spotted on Flock license plate reader cameras near an apartment complex in Kentucky, where she may have friends or family. The sheriff’s office said Hummel likely will not face charges, and the reason for the family’s departure has not been made public.
The case drew widespread attention on social media as family members pressed for the disappearance to be classified as a missing persons case.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued a missing persons alert on behalf of the sheriff’s office on Friday, July 10, followed by an emergency missing child alert, and the sheriff’s office’s posts were shared hundreds of times.
“All 4 have been located and are safe,” the sheriff’s office said in its announcement. “Due to the sensitivity of the case and the ongoing investigation we are not allowed to share many details at this time. We are thankful for each individual that took the time to do the right thing.”
Anyone who had contacted authorities during the search was thanked by the sheriff’s office, which asked that the family be given privacy as the investigation continues.
