The Friends of Hale County Library are pleased to announce a special lecture event featuring Dr. Scot Duncan, a prominent biologist and the Executive Director of Alabama Audubon. The lecture will take place on June 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Hale County Library, located at 1103 Main St, Greensboro, AL 36744.

Dr. Duncan, who was raised on the shores of Pensacola Bay, Florida, by celebrated birders and conservationists Lucy and Bob Duncan, has been passionate about birding since childhood.

With expertise in bird identification and ecology, he has observed 620 species in the United States and 2,071 species worldwide, photographing over 450 of them. His research and explorations have taken him to diverse locations, including Antarctica, New Zealand, East Africa, Central and South America, the Pacific Northwest, and various ecosystems across the southeastern United States.

During his graduate studies, Dr. Duncan focused on tropical forest restoration in Uganda and Latin America. For the past twenty years, he has concentrated his efforts on endangered species and ecosystems in the Southeast. He is the author of the award-winning book Southern Wonder: Alabama’s Surprising Biodiversity, which explains why Alabama is home to more species than any other state east of the Mississippi River. The book has sold over 3,100 copies and won three awards, including the Phil Reed Environmental Writing Award for Non- Fiction from the Southern Environmental Law Center.
