Weekend of special ‘Night Skies’ programs starts Friday

“Night Skies” Weekend: Art, Prairie Ecology, and Astronomy in the Black Belt of Alabama

A weekend of programs titled “Night Skies” will bring art, prairie ecology, and astronomy together in the Black Belt of Alabama on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20–21. The events will feature astronomers Kathryn Williamson, PhD, and Michelle Wooten, PhD.

Friday, Feb. 20: “Paint the Night”

On Friday, Feb. 20, “Paint the Night” will invite participants to explore what watercolor can teach about the night sky and life. The workshop, led by Sally Jay Pasternak, begins at 7 p.m. at Engle Gallery. The cost is $20, and no art experience is required.

Saturday, Feb. 21: Winter Prairie Walk & Night-Sky Program

On Saturday, Feb. 21, a winter prairie walk will begin at 4 p.m. at Contentment. Guided by Elise Smith, the walk will give visitors a chance to listen, observe, and possibly spot an American woodcock or two. The walk costs $15.

Saturday’s events continue at 6 p.m. at Contentment with a light supper, lecture, and night-sky observation led by Drs. Williamson and Wooten. They will speak about observing the night sky and efforts to preserve dark, starry skies, followed by telescope viewing on the prairie. The cost for the supper and night-sky program is $25.
