Effie “Honey” Bates, a beloved wife, mother, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully at her Newbern, Alabama home on July 12, 2023. She was born as Effie Lee Jones to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jabes and Ellen Frances Jones on January 11, 1946, also in Newbern.
Effie found her faith early in life and was a dedicated member of Mt. Valley AME Zion Church, now known as Newbern Mission Church. She held her faith close throughout her life, serving her church until health issues made it difficult.
Effie graduated from Hale County Training School in Greensboro, Alabama in 1963. After graduating, she married Mr. King Bates, Jr., and the couple was blessed with four children: Lenita Faye, Marjorie Lynn, King III, and Legretha.
For many years, Effie was employed by the Hale County Board of Education. She worked at several schools, including Newbern Elementary School, Sawyerville Elementary School, and Sunshine School. Effie’s gentle nature and compassion made her a beloved figure among students and colleagues alike.
Known for her sweetness, generosity, and humility, Effie’s impact stretched beyond her professional life. She had an immense capacity for love, which she freely gave to her husband, children, and extended family. With the voice of an angel, she adored “good singing” and touched the hearts of many.
Preceded in death by her parents and ten of her siblings, Effie is survived by her husband of 56 years, King Bates Jr., her four children, one step-son, Lorenzo Holifield of Hartford, CT, twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several siblings in Cincinnati, Ohio. She also leaves behind numerous caring nieces, nephews, in-laws, and a community of friends.
