Motorists will not be stalled by road construction this Fourth of July holiday.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will suspend all temporary lane closures on interstate routes from Friday, July 3, at 6 a.m. until Sunday, July 5, at 11:59 p.m. Alabama roadways see higher traffic volumes during the holiday, and the suspension is meant to reduce congestion and improve safety as more people travel.
“During the 2024 Fourth of July holiday, 11 people died in crashes in the state of Alabama,” said Dalton Middleton, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator. “That number of deaths was the second highest holiday the entire year, only behind the Thanksgiving holiday. By suspending temporary lane closures, our goal is to keep traffic moving and get everyone to their destinations.”
ALDOT offered several tips for safe holiday travel.
Drivers should avoid distractions, keeping their eyes and minds on the road and staying off their phones.
Speeding remains the top contributor to fatal crashes in Alabama, since it cuts reaction time and worsens crash severity, so drivers should observe posted speed limits.
Everyone in the vehicle should be properly buckled, since seat belts reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash.
ALDOT encourages drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay alert on the road this weekend and throughout the summer travel season.
