The Greensboro Opera House will host nationally known storyteller Dolores Hydock for a weekend of storytelling Aug. 15 and 16, closing with a free public performance.
Hydock will lead a storytelling workshop for about 20 participants from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. Space remains open. The following afternoon, Sunday, Aug. 16, at 3 p.m., Hydock and the workshop participants will present their stories at a public presentation. Admission is free, and a reception will follow.
Hydock has been telling stories since she was 5, when she won a prize in a local storytelling contest in her hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania. She has told stories at festivals and special events across the country since.
Now a Birmingham resident, Hydock has been a featured teller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and has served as teller-in-residence at the International Storytelling Center there. She has collaborated with the Birmingham Museum of Art and with several symphony orchestras on programs that blend stories with art and music. All twelve of her CDs of original stories have received Resource Awards from Storytelling World magazine. The National Storytelling Network awarded her its ORACLE Circle of Excellence Award, and she is also an actress who has appeared in numerous plays.
Hydock has served as a Road Scholar with the Alabama Humanities Alliance since 2003, offering talks on more than a dozen subjects ranging from Ellis Island immigrant stories to the history of Alabama’s Chandler Mountain community.
