The Greensboro City Council voted at its July 14 meeting to pass Resolution 2026-07, authorizing the closure and vacation of a portion of Airport Loop Road.
After consideration and a public hearing on the issue, the Council found that closing the portion of the road adjacent to Greensboro Municipal Airport would not affect ingress and egress for residents of abutting properties. The Council also found the portion of road unnecessary to the interests of the City.
Councilmember Kyser made a motion to table the resolution until a workshop on the road closure could be held. The motion died for lack of a second.
“Nobody will lose access to their land,” Mayor Howard said. “If rural communities don’t get an influx of state or federal funds, they’re done. The government is going to spend a million dollars in Hale County. Who else is going to spend that in Hale County? We can’t pass up on money like that.”
Councilmember Shepherd made a motion to adopt the resolution, and Councilmember Bragg seconded.
The resolution passed and took effect immediately. Kyser abstained, and Councilmember Curtis was absent.
In other business, Indya Evans, a local student interning at the Technology Center, showed a video she made interviewing municipal clerks about the virtues of public service.
The Council announced that Sen. Bobby Singleton deposited a legislative appropriation to the City on July 6 with the request that it be spent on education.
Lisa Cochran of Greensboro Baptist Church asked the Council to close a section of Turner Street on August 2 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a Children’s Day event. Kyser made a motion to close the street at the requested time. Lewis seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Former Department Head Aaron Evans expressed appreciation for city workers and their efforts in the summer heat but noted that numerous piles of debris have not been picked up from residents’ properties. Evans asked the mayor where the City’s boom truck was and why it had not been picking up limb piles and other debris.
“You know where it is,” Howard said. “That boom truck was inoperable when I took office. Ask your friend where it is.”
“The only friend I have is Jesus,” Evans said.
