Kardarrell Darnell Winn was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Reform at a girlfriend’s house with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Hamilton told WBRC. Winn has been charged with murder in the death of 24-year-old Librian ‘BJ’ Jones Jr. of Greensboro.

The shooting occurred at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6, near the 16000 block of Alabama Highway 14 in the Sawyerville community. Hamilton said attendees were at a Class Day Out event near the Sawyerville Convenience Store on Highway 14, but the shooting itself did not take place inside the event venue. No one other than Jones was injured.

Hamilton identified Jones as the victim in a statement Sunday morning. The Hale County Sheriff’s Office announced the shooting through a Facebook post Sunday, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.

Jones’s death is the second homicide of the year in Hale County. The first occurred May 2, when 33-year-old Curtis Lamar White was shot and killed at the intersection of Highway 14 and County Road 77 in Sawyerville. Rayderell Jermaine Tinker, 38, was arrested and charged with murder in that case.

Court records related to Winn across three Alabama counties paint a picture of repeated encounters with law enforcement. In Tuscaloosa County, Winn was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana in 2022 and second-degree assault in 2024.

In Pickens County, Winn was charged with third-degree burglary in 2024. Court records show two subsequent bond forfeiture entries on that case, indicating he failed to appear as required. Winn was arrested Tuesday in Reform, which is in Pickens County.

Winn’s name also appears in connection with one of the most widely remembered violent crimes in recent Sawyerville history. In November 2021, the bodies of Devyn Sterling and Shalondria Grey-Chavers, both 24, were discovered in a shed near Topaz Road in Sawyerville. Fourth Judicial Circuit District Attorney Michael Jackson said investigators believed the couple had been shot to death during a robbery. Two 16-year-olds, Jaligha Brantley and Daquavion Wynn, were charged with capital murder.

A complaint filed in Hale County District Court in November 2021 charged Kardarrell Darnell Winn with hindering prosecution in the first degree related to that case. A Hale County grand jury returned an indictment on the same charge in September 2022.

In Hale County, beyond the hindering prosecution charge tied to the 2021 double homicide, Winn was charged with both third-degree assault and attempting to elude in connection with an August 23, 2025, incident involving a Moundville Police officer. According to the complaint, the officer sustained injuries to his right arm, elbow, both hands and right knee when he fell while pursuing Winn and attempting to take him into custody. The assault charge was later dismissed, according to Alacourt records.

Anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting is asked to contact Capt. Nelson at the Hale County Sheriff’s Office at (334) 624-3081.
