Grant program seeks local legends, ghost stories for roadside markers

Communities with a folktale, ghost story, or local legend to preserve may have the opportunity to gain recognition through a roadside marker grant program administered by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. The application deadline is April 27.

The foundation’s Legends & Lore Marker Program funds the research, fabrication, and installation of cast-iron roadside markers that commemorate local legends and folklore. In Alabama, the Alabama Folklife Association assists communities in preparing and submitting applications.

The Black Belt region, known for its rich oral traditions, folk history, and storytelling, is a natural fit for this program. Anyone with knowledge of a community legend worth preserving is encouraged to learn more and apply at: wgpfoundation.org/history/legendslore/.
