A multi-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, has claimed the life of a Marion man. Ja’Quan D. Brooks, 24, was fatally injured when the 1998 Honda Accord he was driving, left the roadway, re-entered the roadway and struck the 2015 Honda Accord driven by Kendrick T. Chavers, 27, of Sawyerville. After the initial collision, the 1998 Honda Accord struck the 2001 International tractortrailer driven by Herman L. Hinton, 40, of Marion Junction. Brooks was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash occurred on Alabama 69 near the 124 mile marker, approximately six miles south of Moundville, in Hale County. Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.

In 2021, Brooks shot and killed 17-year-old Kendrel Foster in what authorities determined to be self-defense. The shooting sparked a deadly family feud that continued across Perry and Hale counties for the next several months.
