Brett Hughey, age 60, of Marion, Alabama passed away on Monday, December 25, 2023. He was born on August 6,1963 in Selma, Alabama. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Levina Ann Hughey; and sister, Christie Hughey.
Brett is survived by his brother, Bryan Hughey (Jenny); sister, Angie Hughey Duncan (Mike); nephews, Lowell Bryan Hughey, Jr., Troy Hughey, Preston Duncan; niece, Holly Hughey, greatnieces, Abigail Hughey, Anabel Hughey, Alyson Hughey; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Brett grew up in Hopewell Baptist Church. There were alot of children in West Perry and most are still in the community today. Brett attended school in Marion, playing baseball and football. He got a Bachelor’s Degree at Troy State University and then a Masters Degree at Livingston University in early childhood special education. Brett taught in Georgia and Alabama. While in Dublin, Georgia, he taught special education and was a baseball coach for Johnson County Middle School. He lived with his sister Angie and brother-inlaw Mike in Chattanooga while teaching in north Georgia. He has spent the last years in the Greensboro Elementary School. He loved teaching and helping children. Many teachers have shared in several states that everyone thought the world of Brett.
Brett was an avid reader and he loved gardening and being outdoors. He would put up peas, butter beans, and shared his vegetables with the community. His brother Bryan and sister-inlaw Jenny spent a lot of time gardening with him. Brett loved his family life. He loved quality time with his nephews and niece, and then his great nieces. Brett insisted on being the sole caretaker of his mother Ann until her very last days with Alzheimer’s.
Brett was very generous with time and loyalty to others. He had a calming and gentle spirit. Angie said he was the best big brother anyone could have ever had. A man like Brett is one of a kind and will be missed by all.
A visitation for Brett was held Saturday, December 30, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hopewell Baptist Church, 1570 Hopewell Church Rd, Marion, AL 36756 with a Celebration of Life following at 12:00 PM with Pastor George Washburn officiating. His final resting place will be at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Jeff Bradley, Greg Hughey, Darrell Hughey, Greg Hinton, Doyle Northcut, and Troy Hughey. Honorary pallbearers were Terry McGill and Greensboro Elementary School Faculty and Staff.
