Marion Military Institute (MMI) has been ranked the number one community college in Alabama in Niche.com’s 2026 Best Colleges rankings, and placed 11th among all community colleges in the United States.

Niche, a Pittsburgh-based platform used by more than 70 million people annually, bases its rankings on federal data from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation, as well as enrollment and graduation statistics, alumni earnings, and student and alumni reviews.

MMI received an overall Niche grade of A-minus and a student rating of 3.9 out of 5, drawing on 84 reviews.

Founded in 1842, Marion Military Institute is the oldest military junior college in the nation and the official state military college of Alabama. The institution offers Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, with a curriculum designed to prepare cadets for transfer to four-year institutions, direct entry into military service, or appointment to one of the U.S. service academies.

The college boasts a student-to-faculty ratio of 3-to-1, well below the state community college average of 19-to-1.

Reviewers on Niche praised MMI’s close-knit community, small class sizes, and emphasis on leadership development, with the platform describing the institution’s reputation as the “Leadership College of Alabama.”
