According to court records, Carter is facing multiple felony charges, including second-degree assault, first-degree assault, and terrorism, after allegedly attacking several customers inside the store with a crowbar and a knife. Complaints filed in Marengo County District Court allege that Carter struck one woman, identified as Kristen Posey, across the back with a crowbar before pursuing her and her husband through the store. When Jeremy Burge of Hale County intervened to stop the attack, Carter allegedly cut him across the abdomen with a chef’s knife, causing severe injuries. Burge was airlifted to UAB Hospital for emergency surgery.

One of the criminal complaints in the case states that Burge’s injury was so severe that it exposed internal tissue. Family members reported on social media that Burge is now recovering well and appreciates the prayers and support from the community.

Witnesses told police that the scene inside the store was chaotic, with multiple calls reporting a possible active shooter before the nature of the incident became clear.

According to the complaint, Carter selected gloves, a chef’s knife, and a crowbar inside the store before initiating the attack. Walmart was closed for the remainder of the day following the incident.

Carter was arrested by Demopolis police on July 15 and is being held without bond in the Marengo County Jail.

Burge’s family has established a GoFundMe for those who want to donate to help with his recovery, which can be found online at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-jeremy-burge-local-hero-and-dad
