Alabama’s hospitals contribute more than $25 billion annually to the state’s economy, serving as a critical lifeline for communities large and small. With 114 hospitals operating around the clock, 365 days a year, these healthcare facilities deliver essential medical services and act as economic anchors, often representing the largest employer in their communities.
Together, Alabama’s hospitals support more than 143,000 jobs, with 77,557 employees directly working in hospitals, generating a $10.4 billion labor impact. In 2023, hospitals across the state cared for Alabamians through 564,939 inpatient stays, 6,436,331 outpatient visits, and 2,193,297 emergency room visits—providing life-saving care 24 hours a day.
