A slate of state and county road projects in Hale County is moving toward contract letting over the next year, including a resurfacing and lane reconfiguration on State Route 14 west of Greensboro and continued construction on the West Alabama Highway around Greensboro and Moundville.
The projects were reviewed July 21 when the Hale County Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee met at Moundville City Hall. Jonathan Rossell, who serves on the committee, posted an account of the meeting for county residents.
Among state projects, a resurfacing and road diet on State Route 14 from west of Holbrook Place to State Route 61 is scheduled for letting in the fall. A road diet reduces the number of travel lanes on a roadway, often replacing four lanes with two travel lanes and a center turn lane, a design intended to slow traffic and reduce crashes.
Intersection improvements at State Route 69 and the South Bypass in the Lister Lane area, adding left and right turn lanes and an acceleration lane, are scheduled for letting in spring 2027. A resurfacing project on State Route 61 from County Road 48 to State Route 14 is awaiting contract award and a notice to proceed.
Work continues on the West Alabama Highway, a design-build project expanding State Route 69 and building new roadway around Greensboro and Moundville. Construction is already under way south of U.S. Highway 80.
On the county side, a two-foot safety widening of County Road 50 from County Road 44 to Elliott’s Creek Bridge has been awarded. A widening project on County Road 29 from State Route 25 to State Route 69 is expected to let in August, beginning with patching and leveling while widening work advances through project initiation. An improvement project on County Road 21 has received grant funding and remains under development.
Rossell also reported that safety concerns on County Road 64 near Greater Miracle House of Prayer continue to receive attention. Church and community members raised the issue at the committee’s April meeting, citing traffic safety, speeding and the need for guardrails. Rossell said ALDOT, the West Alabama Regional Commission and the Hale County civil engineer are working toward a solution, and that discussions are continuing as the West Alabama Corridor Project develops.
The committee reviewed several recent awards benefiting the county, including a $186,000 Rebuild Alabama grant to Hale County for the State Route 69 and Lister Lane intersection improvements. Moundville received a $150,000 ADEM recycling grant to restore local recycling services and approved paving on portions of Alabama Avenue, Market Street, General Williams Street and CC Loop using gas tax funds.
The committee also approved the West Alabama Coordinated Public Transit Plan 2026 Report, which adds three Hale County community partners working to improve access to transportation and essential services: Healing Steps Movement, Inc., Evans Family Community Wellness Program, Inc.
