The Greensboro City Council has adopted an ordinance restricting heavy truck traffic on a portion of West Main Street, citing safety concerns for pedestrians and schoolchildren and the potential for damage to infrastructure.
Ordinance No. 2026-01, which took effect after being approved April 27 and published in the May 14 edition of the Greensboro Watchman, prohibits trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more from traveling on West Main Street between its intersections with Tuscaloosa Street and Hobson Street.
The restriction covers tractor-trailers and commercial freight vehicles but allows an exception for local deliveries to homes and businesses within the restricted area.
The ordinance followed a petition from residents and property owners along the stretch, which the council noted is primarily residential with pedestrian activity and proximity to a school. Council members found that large commercial trucks on the road presented safety hazards and contributed to excessive wear, noise and potential damage to infrastructure, including underground utilities.
The city will install signage reading “No Through Trucks, Local Delivery Only” along the restricted portion. The Greensboro Police Department will enforce the ordinance, with violations carrying fines of up to $500. Each violation constitutes a separate offense.
