Jones, Tuberville win gubernatorial primaries; multiple statewide races headed to June runoff

Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones and U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville won their respective party primaries for governor on Tuesday, setting up a marquee general election matchup to succeed term-limited Gov. Kay Ivey.

Jones dominated the six-candidate Democratic field with 286,416 votes, or 78.63 percent of 364,280 cast. Will Boyd finished second with 35,249 votes. Tuberville cruised on the Republican side with 421,745 votes, or 85.48 percent of 493,365 cast.

The open U.S. Senate seat produced runoffs in both parties. On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore led with 188,824 votes, or 39.18 percent of 481,940 cast, and will face businessman Jared Hudson, who received 123,531 votes, or 25.63 percent, in a June 16 runoff. Attorney General Steve Marshall finished third with 118,228.

On the Democratic side, Everett Wess led with 134,507 votes, or 39.57 percent of 339,903 cast, and will face Dakarai Larriett, who received 98,950 votes, in the runoff.

Democrat Phillip Ensler won the lieutenant governor nomination with 196,526 votes, or 57.68 percent. The Republican lieutenant governor race heads to a runoff between former state party chairman John Wahl, who led with 192,431 votes, or 40.56 percent, and Secretary of State Wes Allen, who received 180,286, or 38 percent.

The Republican attorney general race also goes to a runoff. Katherine Robertson led with 189,175 votes, or 40.53 percent of 466,718 cast, followed by former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell with 160,613, or 34.41 percent. Blount County District Attorney Pamela L. Casey finished third with 116,930.

Several other Republican races were decided outright. Caroleene Dobson won the secretary of state primary with 286,906 votes, or 65.48 percent. Young Boozer won the state treasurer primary with 306,288 votes, or 68.04 percent. Andrew Sorrell won the state auditor race with 300,154 votes, or 67.94 percent. Matt Gentry defeated incumbent Jeremy H. Oden for Public Service Commission Place 1, receiving 311,836 votes, or 74.89 percent.

The Republican commissioner of agriculture and industries race heads to a runoff between Corey Hill, who received 150,594 votes, or 35.20 percent, and Christina Woerner McInnis, who received 149,177, a margin of just 1,417 votes. Public Service Commission Place 2 will also see a Republican runoff between Jim Zig Zeigler, who led with 189,717 votes, or 44.84 percent, and Chris Beeker with 103,835.

Democrat James O. Gordon won the Public Service Commission Place 1 primary with 187,836 votes, or 57.78 percent.

Alabama voters approved both proposed statewide constitutional amendments. Amendment 1 passed with 81.59 percent of the vote, and Amendment 2 passed with 57.75 percent.
