Hale Co. Hospital thanks community for almost $250k in support pledged

Hale County Hospital would like to thank the community for coming together to raise more than $248,000 through the Alabama Rural Hospital Tax Credit program (HB86).

This new state program allows individuals and businesses to choose where a portion of their Alabama income tax dollars go. Instead of sending those dollars to the state, participants can direct them to their local hospital. It does not cost anything extra — it simply gives people a choice in how their tax dollars are used.

For Hale County Hospital, that support helps strengthen day-to-day operations, including staffing, equipment, and essential services that allow patients to receive care close to home. These funds also support the hospital’s long-term plans, including the construction of a new Emergency Department.

The current emergency room was built in 1963 and was designed for a very different time. The new Emergency Department, expected to break ground later this summer, will be more than 6,000 square feet and designed to meet today’s healthcare needs.

The new space will include six treatment rooms, including a bariatric-capable room, a dedicated psychiatric holding room, a decontamination room, a new patient waiting area, and a covered ambulance entrance. The updated design will improve patient flow, increase safety for staff and patients, and allow the hospital to better respond to emergencies in the community.

“This really says a lot about Hale County,” said CEO Shay Cherry. “People stepped up quickly to support their hospital, and we are very thankful. This hospital has always been about neighbors helping neighbors.”

The Alabama Rural Hospital Tax Credit program will continue in the coming years, with Hale County Hospital eligible to receive up to $1 million in 2027 and up to $1.25 million in 2028.

For more information on how to participate, contact Holly Ellis at h.ellis@halecohosp.com or visit the Alabama Department of Revenue (ADOR) website address:
