The Alabama Extension Food Safety and Quality team is excited to launch the new Alabama Cottage Food Law online course.
This self-paced course is open to anyone who is interested or planning to produce food for sale to the public from their home kitchen. It is a flexible, accessible resource designed to allow participants to work at their own pace and on their own schedule.
Cost
The course is $25, which includes all materials and an emailed certificate upon completion.
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is for home-based food producers who need to attend a food safety course approved by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Course Topics
In this course, participants will learn about the following:
- The origins of the Cottage Food Law and the purpose of this option for home-based food producers.
- The dos and don’ts of cottage food production and what the law requires to ensure safe, high-quality products to Alabama consumers.
- Food safety testing requirements and resources.
- Label requirements, including declaration of allergens.
- Food safety in the home, including cleaning and sanitation practices.
- Basic principles of home preservation, including water bath canning and fermentation.
Time Commitment
Most participants can finish the entire course in approximately 1 hour. However, participants can easily stop if needed and pick back up where they left off at a later time.
