A powerful storm, possibly generating a tornado, swept through parts of Perry and Hale Counties on Sunday afternoon, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The severe weather caused significant damage, particularly in areas near Newbern, where downed trees and power lines created widespread disruption. Residents in both counties experienced power outages, with some homes and businesses remaining without electricity until late Monday evening.

In response to the storm, all nine fire departments in Hale County, along with the Hale County Highway Department, were actively involved in clearing debris from roadways. County workers and volunteers from Perry County also contributed to the recovery efforts, ensuring that roads were made passable and helping residents who had suffered property damage.

Several homes in the affected areas were struck by falling trees, and at least two vehicles were destroyed.

Emergency services were inundated with calls, with Hale County 911 receiving hundreds of reports and efficiently coordinating the response. The quick action of these first responders and volunteers was crucial in managing the immediate aftermath of the storm.
