Summer learning at Greensboro Elementary School has been well underway, with many students continuing their education during their summer vacations. Volunteers from Sawyerville Day Camp, along with educators from Greensboro, have been participating in this summer programming to encourage students along their learning journey. With an intensive focus on STEM subjects, various activities presented offer students a way to hone their skills in both math and science.

Among these activities was “If You Give a Cat a Cupcake”, which dealt with solving multiplication problems through arranging different groups of cats and figuring out how many cupcakes were consumed by each. Along with addition, number guessing, and manipulatives, students have been learning about finance.

After a reading of Night at the Fair by Donald Crews, emerging fifth and sixth graders used a multitude of strategies to determine how they could spend $150 at a fictional fair. Each student then wrote out on a poster, a narrative account of how each dollar was spent at the fair.
