Hale County schools battle food insecurity

WVUA 23 recently featured Moundville Elementary School and their efforts to battle food insecurity through a new free meal program for students. After the pandemic, Hale County schools lost eligibility for free meals through COVID relief funds. However, Hale County Schools recently enrolled in a Community Eligibility Provision for a free meal option at schools in low-income areas.

Families facing food insecurity due to inflation and living in food deserts, these free meals provide relief. Data from the Alabama Department of Education more than 550 schools across the state participate in the CEP program. Moundville Elementary School also revealed plans to feed students outside the fiveday school week, and provide free meals all week long.
