The City of Greensboro is considering a redistricting plan for its City Council districts. The mayor and council will hold a public hearing on the plan on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. Residents are encouraged to attend.

The city has released one proposed map to be considered at the hearing Tuesday night.

In that proposal, the district that stands to see the most change is District 4, which includes the easternmost portions of Greensboro. District line changes would shrink District 4’s footprint, with a corner of it located on the west side of Co. Rd. 33 going to District 5. District 5 would also add an area bounded on the north by Main Street, on the south by College Street, on the west by 1st Street and on the east by 3rd Street. This area is also currently part of District 4.

District 3 would add an area that is bounded on the north by State Street, on the south by Hall Street, on the west by Centreville Street and on the east by 1st Street, also currently a part of District 4.

While adding that area, District 3 would also lost some ground, as an area bounded on the north by Wabash Street, on the south by Powers Street, on the west by Tuscaloosa Street and on the east by Centreville Street is slated to become a part of District 2.

Under the current proposal, District 1 would remain unchanged.

The population represented in each district would stay roughly the same, dividing Greensboro into five equal districts for the purposes of municipal elections.

A map of the proposed redistricting plan is on page 6 of this week’s Greensboro Watchman, along with the city’s Notice of Public Hearing. It can also be reviewed at Greensboro City Hall, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Residents with questions or comments regarding the proposed redistricting plan are encouraged to contact City Clerk Lorrie Cook at (334) 624-8119 ext. 2 or (334) 624-0500 (fax).
