The City of Greensboro is on track to add new police officers, and to give officers a raise, in the coming fiscal year. Mayor Johnnie Washington and the city council have held work sessions throughout the month with City Clerk Lorrie Cook working on the city’s budget for 2023. Cook presented the council with a tentative balanced budget at an Aug. 17 work session.

In that budget, the city’s officer base pay will be $18 per hour. Other officers’ pay will increase at a rate of $12.50 per hour, based on their experience and years of service to the city. The budget also includes the addition of two new police officer positions to the city’s budget.

Cook said that 75% of the salaries for the new positions, as well as the latest new officer the city has already added, will be paid for through a federal COPS grant.

The council has also discussed the possibility of raising garbage collection rates for the coming year. Washington told the council that the city would need to rent a dumpster to aid with the disposal of large items from residential customers. An increase in rates, he said, would help the city to defray that cost.

The council had another workshop set for Wednesday night, Aug. 24 to discuss the budget further. The results of that workshop were not available as of press time.
