GPD’s Chief Mike Hamilton will be new Hale County sheriff

Greensboro Police Chief Michael Hamilton will have a new title soon. the veteran law enforcement officer won his race in the Democratic primary for Hale County Sheriff on Tuesday night, May 24. There being no declared Republican opposition for the office, Hamilton is presumed to be the winner and Hale County’s next sheriff.

Turnout in the 2022 primary was low, with only 2,378 votes cast in the Hale County Sheriff race. Of those votes, Hamilton received 1,273, while Willie J. Bryant, the only other candidate in the race, got 1,105.

Reached by phone Tuesday night as final totals came in, Hamilton said he was full of gratitude for the victory, and for the opportunity to serve.

“I thank God for this chance and thank Hale County for their support,” he said. “I definitely want to thank my family for the hard work and long hours they’ve put into this.”

Hamilton is a veteran law enforcement officer, having served in the Black Belt region all his life.

He said he looked forward to this new chapter in his career serving the people of his home county.

“My service to Hale County will continue,” he said.
