Local schools celebrate reading on Dr. Seuss’ birthday

Wednesday, March 2, was National Read Across America Day. The national holiday, celebrated by schools across the country, is also known for falling on the birthday of famed author Dr. Seuss. Community members, teachers, and students alike all took place in a multitude of festivities to mark the special day. Greensboro Elementary School celebrated with a number of Dr. Seuss Math Days. Activities included all grade levels. Lessons involved measurement and data connected to the reading of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Students made graphs, measured, weighed, and counted multicolored Goldfish snack crackers. The Greensboro Middle School’ volleyball team also came to Greensboro Elementary to interact with students during the holiday. With them was a special guest, the Grinch, who read to students. At Robert C. Hatch served green eggs and ham with their readings. Students read to visiting children and other students throughout the day. Books like Hop on Pop were among the readings at R.C. Hatch. Breakthrough Charter School celebrated with a Cat in the Hat day to celebrate the holiday. Students came in matching outfits with their best friends and favorite teachers, in the spirit of Things 1 and 2. Students also took part in a dress up day called the First Rule of Punk, which encouraged students to wear their wackiest ensembles in the spirit of rock and roll. Students also enjoyed a reading from the Cat in the Hat, himself. Kevin Tims dressed up for the students to join in on the festivities.
