The Alabama Extension Food Safety and Quality team is excited to launch the new Alabama Cottage Food Law online course. This self-paced course is open to anyone who is interested in or planning to produce food for sale to the public from their home kitchen. It is a flexible, accessible resource designed to allow participants to work at their own pace and on their own schedule.
The course is $25, which includes all materials and an emailed certificate upon completion.
This course is for home-based food producers who need to attend a food safety course approved by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
In this course, participants will learn about the following:
• The origins of the Cottage Food Law and the purpose of this option for home-based food producers.
• The dos and don’ts of cottage food production and what the law requires to ensure safe, high-quality products to Alabama consumers.
• Food safety testing requirements and resources.
• Label requirements, including declaration of allergens.
• Food safety in the home, including cleaning and sanitation practices.
• Basic principles of home preservation, including water bath canning and fermentation.
Most participants can finish the entire course in approximately 1 hour. However, participants can easily stop if needed and pick back up where they left off at a later time.
