Council votes to pay insurance premium, fund police raises

The Greensboro City Council moved to make a payment of $136,763 to the Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation during its January 27 meeting. Councilmember Curtis made the motion to pay the bill, Councilmember Shepherd seconded the motion, and it was unanimously carried.

Curtis also moved to transfer $149,346.93 from the city’s Capital account to cover the cost of salary increases for the Police Department. Councilmember Lewis seconded the motion, and it was unanimously carried.

Councilmember Kyser made a motion to purchase ALDOT surplus property, including but not limited to one forklift, a generator, and a toolbox, at a price of $21,340. Councilmember Lewis seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously.

Mayor Ralph Howard thanked the Council for their hard work during the first ninety days of his mayoral term. He said that he and the Council have been working hard and making progress. Howard noted that the City has been able to get its police force to the proper level and has hired a new Street Department Head.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Aaron Evans expressed concern over Greensboro’s lack of a storm shelter and asked whether the City was planning to build one.

“We’re going to get the storm shelter,” said Kyser. “We have a plan, and as soon as we have the funds, we will build a storm shelter.”

Mayor Howard also addressed the concern, saying:

“We dodged a bullet with the ice storm that just came through this weekend. We’re trying to get a generator for the Recreation Center in order to establish a warming center.”
