Main Street residents are award’s inaugural recipients in honor of outstanding yard care
The Greensboro Garden Club has officially launched its “Yard of the Month” program, aiming to recognize residents who demonstrate exceptional pride and care in maintaining their yards. This initiative seeks to encourage beautification throughout the community, inspiring neighbors to enhance the curb appeal of their homes.
Each month, a Greensboro resident will be selected for their outstanding efforts in gardening, landscaping, and overall yard maintenance. The club welcomes nominations from the community, and anyone wishing to suggest a deserving neighbor is encouraged to contact Greensboro Garden Club President Eve Engle at (334) 663-7433.
The first recipients of Yard of the Month are Jackie and Mark Sullivan. The Sullivans purchased the Weil Blunt McMurry house on Main Street in 2016.
This beautiful yard stands out for its vibrant flowerbeds, neatly trimmed shrubs, and welcoming outdoor space. When asked what they loved most about working in their yard, they laughed and agreed that, growing up, that was all each of them knew.
Mark spoke of his father’s manicured yard with all sorts of things growing in it, including peonies. Before leaving, Mark would be pointing out his own peony bed like his dad had. He chuckled explaining how it wasn’t until he was in his fifties before he was allowed to work in his father’s yard unsupervised.
Jackie smiled with pride sharing how her mother and grandmother both had green thumbs. “My mother had an incredible knack for growing just about anything from the smallest clipping. We used to pick at her saying we don’t think she ever bought a plant in her life. She could get the smallest twig from a friend and magically get it to take root and grow,” she explained.
After visiting with the Sullivans, it is obvious that the love, warmth, and humor this couple share no doubt permeates into their exquisite yard. Their dedication to creating a beautiful tribute to their families has set a high standard for the honor.
If you know someone who goes above and beyond in caring for their yard, reach out to Eve Engle to nominate them for next month’s recognition. The Greensboro Garden Club looks forward to celebrating more outstanding yards and fostering a sense of pride across the community.
