Eutaw woman dies in collision with garbage truck near Sawyerville

A Eutaw woman was killed and two children were injured in a fiery crash on Alabama 14 Friday morning, Oct. 31, near the 53-mile marker east of Eutaw.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Janae L. Neese, 26, was driving a 2017 Hyundai Elantra when it struck the rear of a 2018 Freightliner M2 garbage truck driven by Demondre L. Pernell, 31, of Greensboro. After the impact, the Hyundai caught fire. Neese was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers in the car, ages 5 and 11, were injured and airlifted to an area hospital for treatment. Earlier reports from local authorities indicated one child was first taken by ambulance to DCH Regional Medical Center and the other was flown from Hale County High School to UAB Hospital.

The crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. on Highway 14 near Sawyerville. ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division is investigating.
