The Hale County community honors the extraordinary life of Mrs. Alberta Patricia Hope Scott, who transitioned peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the age of 103.
Born on January 20, 1922, in Hale County, Alabama, to the late Rev. Willie E. Hope and Mattie Hopson Hope, Mrs. Scott was one of thirteen children. She is preceded in death by siblings Ophelia Hope, Anna Clara Mucker, Betsy Waiters, Cleophus Hope, Naomi Rogers, and Elizabeth Rogers. She is survived by Juanita Hope, Roosevelt Hope, Moses Hope, Augusta Baltimore, Eugene Hope, and Willie James Hope.
A proud alumna of Alabama State University, Mrs. Scott graduated in May 1947, later pursuing additional coursework at Wayne State University, Southern University, and the University of Alabama.
Her career in education spanned over 35 years in the Hale County School System, where she taught mathematics at Hale County Training School and later at Greensboro Public School East. Revered for her high standards, compassionate mentorship, and generational impact, she shaped countless lives throughout the region.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Scott was active in civic, cultural, and religious life. She served on the board of the Safe House Museum in Greensboro and was a dedicated member of the Hale County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a founding member and the first Chaplain of the Sarah Christian Civic Club, an organization devoted to community leadership and legacy.
Her spiritual journey began at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where her father pastored. Later, she served in ministry alongside her husband, the late Rev. Obie Leonard Scott, Jr., as First Lady in the AME Zion Church. In her later years, she returned to St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, where she served as a Steward and Stewardess. Due to her years of service, she was honored as a Lifetime Steward in 2022.
In recognition of her long and impactful life, Mrs. Scott was selected to receive a certificate from the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame during their August ceremony, celebrating her for reaching 100 years of age and for her committed membership in the Alabama Education Retirees Association.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Jasper Hope (2023). She leaves to cherish her memory: her niece Barbara Williams; daughter-inlaw Bertha Hope; grandchildren Justin Hope and Kendra Hope; great-niece Kaleda (Kevin) Williams-Zanders; greatnephew Andrew D’Elbert Williams; great-greatnephew Kevin Zanders, Jr.; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, greatnieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
A public viewing will take place on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Washington & Paige Mortuary, 17745 AL-25, Greensboro, Alabama 36744.
The celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, 1006 Morse Street, Greensboro, Alabama 36744. Rev. Stephany Colenberg will officiate. Public viewing at the church will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Mt. Tabor AME Zion Church Cemetery, 8747 Coretta Scott King Highway (Highway 29), Marion, Alabama 36756.
