What began as a family dispute involving a dog ended with gunfire and the arrest of 19-year-old Taveon Luceffer Sanders, according to Hale County court records.
The altercation took place at a residence on Rosemary Road around noon on July 21. According to a complaint filed in Hale County district court, Sanders’ brother got involved in an argument after allegedly being bitten by a dog and kicked the animal, which escalated tensions with other relatives present at the home. The situation reportedly grew heated, with shouting and threats exchanged.
According to court documents, Sanders left the argument briefly, retrieved a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, and fired a single shot into the ground during the confrontation. One family member allegedly told deputies that the situation could have been avoided if Sanders had not gone for the gun.
When deputies from Hale County Sheriff’s Department arrived, Sanders admitted to firing the gun, which he said belonged to his older brother. The weapon was recovered and placed into evidence.
Sanders was taken into custody without further incident. He is charged with third-degree domestic violence, which includes reckless endangerment, and was held on a $4,000 bond with a 24-hour domestic violence hold. Court records show he also had an outstanding warrant from Tuscaloosa County.
