Greensboro Raider former defensive tackle Grady Jackson was drafted by the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, April 20, in the sixth round. A 1992 graduate of Greensboro Public East, Jackson attended Hinds Junior College in Jackson, Miss. and Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tenn. He is the son of the late Grady and Rosie M. Williams, and the nephew of Joe Williams of Montgomery and Carolyn Williams of Greensboro. Grady, who is known to his friends as “Neal,” will begin camp with the Raiders in May. The Economic Development Steering Committee that was organized in February to explore the opportunity of forming a Hale County Economic Development Authority met in Moundville last week. Local citizens, elected officials, and utility company representatives attended the meeting at Moundville City Hall on Friday. Steering committee members Austin Dare and Don Ballard explained the history of the program and the progress made so far. Alabama Power Company, Alagasco, BellSouth, Moundville Telephone, and other utilities pledged to support their efforts. Alex Banks has joined the United States Army Reserve under the Delayed Training Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Selma. Banks, a student at R.C. Hatch High School in Uniontown, will report to Fort McClellan, Anniston, for military basic training on July 22. He is the son of Andrew and Matilda Banks of Uniontown. The Hale County Retired Teachers Association met on Thursday afternoon, April 10, at 2:00 o’clock at the R.E. Ramey Educational Center in Greensboro. The meeting was called to order by Wilma Cephus, president. Mrs. Jovita Lewis was introduced as the speaker by Mrs. Cephus. Her message was on “Teamwork.” With only a few days left, the Family Resource Center is making last minute plans to aid job seekers to prepare for the Job Fair. The 1997 Job Fair, which will be held on Wednesday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is the first county-wide recruiting event in Hale County. The Job Fair is open to the public and expects to attract residents in Hale, Greene, Sumter, Marengo, and Perry counties who seek full time or summer employment.
