Six-month period before 334 area code will require 10 digit dialing starts in July

Starting July 23, 2025, residents in the 334 area code—including Hale and Perry counties—can begin dialing 10 digits for local calls as part of a transition to a new area code. The new 483 area code will overlay the existing 334 area and will be assigned to new phone numbers beginning February 23, 2026.

During the permissive dialing period from July 23 to January 23, calls will go through whether you dial 7 or 10 digits. But after January 23, 2026, all local calls must include the area code.

What to do now:

  • Reprogram phones, fax machines, security systems, and other devices to use 10-digit dialing.
  • Update contact lists, printed materials, business cards, and ID tags to include your area code.
  • Emergency numbers like 911 and 988 will continue to work as usual.

Your phone number isn’t changing, and local calls will remain local. For more information, visit psc.alabama.gov.
