Farm-City Week is November 17-23, 2023. This year’s theme is “Agritourism: Connecting Alabama Farms and Communities”. Farm-City Week is a time to pause and express appreciation for the beneficial partnerships between rural and urban communities. Agritourism, tourism based in agriculture, attracts visitors onto a farm, ranch, or other agricultural business for the purposes of entertaining, creating awareness, or educating the visitors while generating income for the farm, ranch, or business owner. Agritourism is finding the biggest pumpkin in the patch, picking the perfect Christmas tree at a farm, selecting the ripest strawberry in the field, fishing, visiting a farm stand or market and hiking through a forest. It is so exciting to partner with local Hale County agencies and officials to sponsor various activities and recognize the contributions of Farm-City relationships to Hale County’s quality of life. In the coming weeks, the Hale County Farm-City Steering Committee will be spotlighting Agritourism that is unique to Hale County.
The Hale County Farm- City Steering Committee and its donors made available Farm-City competitions to all students at each Hale County school. Local sponsorship provided $60.00 to first place winners, $40.00 to second place winners, and $20.00 to third place winners. Each teacher of a first place winner also received $60.00. All participants received a certificate of recognition as well. As a result, 33 students throughout the county entered their best work in this year’s competitions. Schools represented included Greensboro Elementary, Moundville Elementary, and Southern Academy. First place entries will be entered in the statewide competition, prior to the February 2024 deadline. Hats off to local teachers for encouraging students to participate.
As November 17-23, 2023 is proclaimed Farm- City Week in Hale County, join me in celebrating the importance of working together to create abundance, wealth, and strength for our county, nation, and world.
