Sawyerville Summer Learning volunteers have been hard at work offering youth from Hale and Perry County plenty of fun and activities during the summer months. Under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama, the program is entering its 30th year of operations, grounded in reading enhancement and communal connections.

Working from donations, the project announced last week that they were halfway to their $30,000 goal for this summer’s donation drive, with $10,909 raised in one weekend alone. Various levels of monetary donations provide resources to students during the program.

Volunteers with Project Horseshoe Farms joined Sawyerville volunteers at Marion Military Institute for a day of swimming with local third and fourth graders.

Rt. Rev. Glenda S. Curry, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Alabama, and community leaders met on June 29 to discuss future plans for the program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greensboro. Later that same day, youth were offered a ride on the Sawyerville Birthday Bus for their 30th anniversary celebration. Past volunteers were recognized and activities for the youth were provided.
