The Hale County Extension Office is asking residents to grow and donate at least 250 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables before Labor Day as part of a statewide Alabama Extension challenge.
The Grow More, Give More 250-Pound Challenge runs through Sept. 7 and is part of Alabama Extension’s observance of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Every Alabama county has been given the same 250-pound target.
Eddie Smith, president of the Black Belt Small Farmers Ruminant Improvement Association, recently brought 5 pounds of fresh scuppernongs to the Hale County Extension Office toward the county’s total.
Participants are asked to grow or gather produce, give it to someone in need or to a local organization, weigh the donation and record it so it counts toward the county total.
Donations may go to a food pantry, food bank, community kitchen, place of worship, family member or neighbor.
