A Greensboro man is dead and a Greensboro police officer is recovering from gunshot wounds after an officer-involved shooting during a traffic stop on the evening of Thursday, April 2.

Robert Williams, 64, of Greensboro, was killed and Officer Miguel Edwards was wounded in the incident, which occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Blount Street near the Magnolia Village Apartments, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

ALEA said Edwards was conducting a traffic stop when Williams, the driver, produced a firearm and shot the officer. Edwards returned fire, striking Williams. Williams was transported to Hale County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Edwards was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The 4th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office confirmed Williams’ death in a press release on Friday, April 3.

“It is with profound sorrow that this Office must now report that the civilian, Robert Williams of Greensboro, Alabama, has since succumbed to his injuries and has been pronounced deceased,” District Attorney Robert H. Turner Jr. wrote. “The Office extends its deepest condolences to the Williams family and to all who loved him.”

Turner said Edwards remains hospitalized and is in stable condition but in pain as he recovers. Edwards has been with the Greensboro Police Department for approximately two months.

Greensboro Mayor Ralph Howard confirmed the shooting to WBRC on Thursday night and said Edwards is in stable condition. Howard described Edwards as a young officer who has shown courage and dedication, calling him an asset to the department and the city. Howard also expressed sympathy for the Williams family and urged the community to come together.

The case has been assigned to ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Hale County Sheriff’s Office. Turner said the referral was made due to the inherent conflict of interest in a local agency investigating a shooting involving one of its own officers.

ALEA will serve as the lead investigative authority. The SBI has reportedly received body camera footage from the incident. Other videos, purportedly taken by bystanders to the incident, have circulated online among area social media users.

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the district attorney’s office.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor issued a statement calling the incident a reminder of the dangers officers face.

“What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation,” Taylor said.

Turner thanked the residents and staff of the Magnolia Village Apartments for their cooperation with investigators, and praised the response of law enforcement agencies, paramedics, and medical personnel from across the region.

The Rev. Detyrick King officiated a community prayer service at Greensboro Presbyterian Church at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4, in response to the shooting, asking the community to pray for Officer Edwards’ recovery and for all families involved.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. No additional details have been released.
