A second public input session on a proposed rail-trail connecting Greensboro, Marion, and Selma will be held Wednesday, March 11, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Harris Technology Hub, 401 Washington Street in Marion.

The session is part of the Greensboro-Marion-Selma Regional Rail-Trail Feasibility Study. The project team will present proposed trail alignment, Phase 1 implementation ideas, and timelines.

A rail-trail is a recreational path for walking, cycling, and other uses built along a former railroad corridor. The old rail beds provide a natural foundation for long-distance trails because they are already graded and relatively flat. Former railroad corridors in the area between the three cities remain visible in many places.

The feasibility study examines the potential for such a trail connecting the three communities. Proponents note that rail-trails in other parts of the country have boosted tourism, supported local businesses, and increased property values in rural areas.
