The Rev. Matthew Johnson died Dec. 31, 2025, at the age of 74. He was born Oct. 26, 1951, the only son of proud parents Matthew Johnson, Sr. and Katie Lee Johnson.
He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Salem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dansby, where he served as a choir member and later on the Deacon’s Board before being called into the ministry in 1998. He was blessed to lead the flock at Whitsett Baptist Church in 2004.
He was a proud member of the Class of 1970 at the Hale County Training School, Greensboro, AL.
He worked his longest tenure of employment with the Hale County Highway Dept. as sign engineer and completed his employment duties with the City of Greensboro when his health began to fail.
On June 8, 1985, he was united in holy matrimony to Dianne Williams Johnson. To this 40-year union was the blessing of two daughters.
Matthew quietly answered his Heavenly Father’s call early Wednesday morning, December 31, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Johnson, Sr., and Katie Lee Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Dianne Johnson; three daughters, Fornina Patterson, Greensboro, AL; Kia Johnson, Fultondale, AL; and Kara (Darryl) Patterson, Charlotte, North Carolina; two sisters, Yvonne Johnson, Greensboro, AL and Evelyn (Fugene) Grant, Tuskegee, AL; one sister-in-law, Delois Mickens, Greensboro, AL; three nephews, Cory Grant, Radcliff, Kentucky; Cornelius (Shundra) Grant, Elizabethtown, Kentucky; and Kennan Williams, Greensboro, AL; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; five great nephews; special cousins, Adelaide Hearns and Lynett (Philip) Wagner, all of Greensboro, AL; and a host of other special cousins and friends, including his longtime friend Otha Holman.
Funeral services were held Jan. 3, 2026, at Salem Baptist Church in Greensboro with Pastor Calvin Johnson of Pleasant Grove and Willow Spring Baptist Churches serving as eulogist and Washington and Paige Mortuary directing.
