A two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 80 near Faunsdale shut down the westbound lanes Tuesday night and sent emergency crews to the scene, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Sgt. Reginal King said the wreck happened at about 7:15 p.m. near the 48-mile marker in Marengo County and caused a lane closure while troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division investigated. The scene was west of the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 80 and Alabama Hwy. 25.
Motorists posting on social media described traffic at a standstill as they approached the scene between Uniontown and Demopolis, with some drivers turning around to reroute.
Social media reports indicated at least one fatality and a number of others injured in the crash, but ALEA had not confirmed any deaths or released information on injuries as of press time.
Shortly before the wreck, a Uniontown resident had posted a warning to Facebook that a car was traveling the wrong way down Highway 80 and urged drivers to be on the lookout.
After the crash, another motorist posted on Facebook that a vehicle passed him on the wrong side of the road near the U.S. 80–Alabama Hwy. 69 intersection and that he had to move out of its way.
ALEA said troopers will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
