Cops say inmate at re-entry facility, impersonating an officer, makes call to arrange his own release
A Selma man has been charged with second-degree escape and impersonating a peace officer after authorities say he tried to break away from a state-run detention program in Perry County and then telephoned a woman while pretending to be an employee there.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Perry County District Court, Edward Kadetruis Bell, 34, is accused of attempting to escape on Dec. 3 from the Perry County PREP State Detention Facility in Uniontown. The complaint alleges that Bell “did on or about December 3, 2025, escape or attempt to escape from a penal facility,” identified in court papers as the PREP center.
In a separate count, Bell is charged with impersonating a peace officer. Investigators say that on the same date he falsely claimed to work for the PREP center when he called a person identified in court records as Watravia Eaton and said he was employed at the state detention facility in Uniontown.
The complaint cites Alabama Code Sections 13A-10-32 and 13A-10-11, which define second-degree escape and impersonating a peace officer as Class C felonies.
Court records show Bell was arrested Dec. 4 by Uniontown Police Chief Michael Kiser and booked into the Perry County Jail. His bond was set at $5,000.
Bell remains presumed innocent unless and until he is convicted in court.
