November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and the Hale County Community Health and Wellness Care Station at the Akron Public Library held a “Diabetic Shoe Clinic” on November 20, 2025. Joan Spence of Community Health, Inc. partnered with the Care Station for the event. Spence is a licensed CPed (certified pedorthist), a licensed orthotic fitter, and a licensed mastectomy fitter with more than 25 years of experience.
The goal of the diabetic shoe clinic was to help prevent and treat foot problems associated with diabetes by providing properly fitted, therapeutic footwear and orthotics. Participants of the foot clinic were fitted for diabetic shoes to help protect feet, improve mobility and reduce the risk of injuries, ulcers and future amputations.
Sponsored in part by Tombigbee RC&D, the shoe clinic was part of the “Healthy Hale Initiative.”
