The Engle Gallery, LLC held an opening on Friday, November 7, featuring the works of a University of Alabama student, Camille Sealy.
Black Boy, Breathe: The Photography of Camille Sealy featured a number of photographic portraits by Sealy, who is studying photography. A senior at the University, this show marks Sealy’s first public show and is one of the select number of photography-centric shows the gallery has hosted. The show is considered “part one” of what will be an ongoing series for the artist.
“Black Boy, Breathe is a discussion on black men’s views, consumption, procession, and expression—how they are portrayed in media,” read part of Sealy’s statement on the show. Part One of the series depicts models Josiah Jerald, Tyson Evans, and Decarlos Caple, Jr., in natural light, with a macro-focus on anatomy and vulnerability. Inspired by other southern black photographers such as Arielle W. Gray and Will Henry, the project seeks to highlight three different perceptions of men in media.
