Feeding Alabama offers help for Alabamians struggling with food access

Feeding Alabama and its eight Feeding America food banks, together with over 1,700 partner agencies, are stepping up to ensure families continue to have access to food and essential resources during this uncertain time. With approximately 750,000 Alabamians relying on SNAP for food assistance and 62,000 federal employees in the state facing uncertainty, many families are experiencing added financial stress. Our network is working diligently to provide food and support to those in need, ensuring communities are served with all available resources.

Our Network and Its Response

Last year, Alabama’s food banks distributed over 90 million pounds of food to community partners, while food insecurity continues to rise. According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, more than 833,000 Alabamians — including nearly 250,000 children, face hunger. Many families are confronting financial challenges and disruptions to assistance programs, putting additional pressure on household food budgets.

Feeding Alabama’s network is taking proactive steps to meet growing demand by:

  • Coordinating with partners in affected communities to ensure resources reach those most in need.
  • Reviewing food inventories, and planning ahead for the holidays, a time of increased need.
  • Preparing staff and volunteers to respond quickly as challenges arise.

While we anticipate that demand for food assistance may increase, our commitment remains steadfast: to do everything possible to ease the burden for Alabama families.

To help during this time, Feeding Alabama has included a flyer with key resources. It features the Food Finder, which connects individuals to local food pantries across all 67 counties, and information about the Benefits Enrollment Center, which provides personalized assistance with screening and applying for nutrition programs, including SNAP.

How You Can Help

Feeding Alabama encourages the public to donate or volunteer with their local food bank. This is the work our network does every day —responding to disasters and helping families in need. Together, we can help bridge the gap for those facing hunger.

If you or someone you know needs food assistance, visit our Food Finder at https://feedingalabama.org/need-help/ to locate a nearby pantry. For help applying for food benefits or finding resources, contact the Benefits Enrollment Center at 1-877-833-2550.

About Feeding Alabama

Feeding Alabama works to end hunger by assisting the food bank network in obtaining more food and funds, fostering public awareness of the food banks’ mission, and creating partnerships to help alleviate hunger in Alabama. Every day, the eight food banks in Alabama partner with a statewide network of food donors, emergency food pantries, and soup kitchens to provide food to hungry people. Fighting hunger requires significant funding for every step of the process—from acquiring food, to storing the food, to transporting the food to people in need. Learn more at feedingalabama.org.
