A community benefit concert is planned next week to help Jeremy Burge and his family with medical bills and other expenses following the July 15 stabbing at the Demopolis Walmart. The event will be held Sunday, Oct. 5, at 5 p.m. at The Stable, 1120 Main St., with $10 admission. According to organizers, the lineup includes Jason Irving (Hock Music), the Bluegrass Study Group, and Tyler Sellers, and the evening is intended as a show of gratitude for Burge’s actions and a boost to his recovery.
Burge was seriously injured while stepping in to protect others during the incident inside the store. According to complaints filed in Marengo County District Court, a shopper was struck across the back with a crowbar and chased through the aisles. When Burge intervened, the assailant allegedly slashed him across the abdomen with a chef’s knife, causing severe injuries.
Burge was airlifted to UAB Hospital for emergency surgery and has been recovering since; his family has said on social media that he is doing better and appreciates the community’s prayers and support.
The benefit concert is one of several efforts underway to help with medical and household costs while Burge continues his recovery. Those who cannot attend may still contribute online through the family’s GoFundMe campaign, “Support Jeremy Burge — Local Hero and Dad.” Organizers say the goal is to pack the venue and send Burge and his family a clear message that the community stands with them.
