Mike Warren was well-known as ‘Voice of the Cougars’ at SA sporting events
A deadly house fire east of Greensboro early Monday morning claimed the life of a well-known community member and left his wife hospitalized with serious injuries.
Authorities confirmed that 75-year-old Michael Warren died in the fire, which broke out just before dawn on August 11 at the couple’s home on Alabama Highway 14. His wife, Carol Warren, was airlifted for medical treatment and remained hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon.
The Hale County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with Hale County EMS and the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Department. Sheriff Michael Hamilton said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen, and there may have been an explosion or backdraft as the Warrens tried to escape the burning home.
Individuals familiar with the incident said it appeared the blast may have thrown Carol Warren from the burning structure, though she sustained significant injuries.
The Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.
The Warrens are widely known in Hale County. Michael Warren was, for many years, the voice behind the microphone at Southern Academy sporting events. His recognizable cadence earned him the nickname “The Voice of the Cougars,” and he was a fixture at games for generations of local families.
Both Michael and Carol Warren were described by officials as beloved members of the community.
