Sales tax holiday this weekend can help parents save on back-to-school shopping

Alabama families can save money on back-toschool supplies during the state’s 20th annual Backto- School Sales Tax Holiday, which begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 18 and runs through midnight on Sunday, July 20.

During this tax holiday, shoppers can purchase certain school supplies, books, computers, and clothing free of Alabama’s 4% state sales or use tax. Additionally, more than 300 cities and counties throughout Alabama are waiving their local sales taxes.

Some clothing items that will be eligible for the sales tax exemption include belts, boots, caps, coats, diapers, dresses, gloves, gym suits, hats, hosiery, jackets, jeans, neckties, pajamas, pants, raincoats, robes, sandals, scarves, school uniforms, shirts, shoes, shorts, socks, sneakers, and underwear. Each article of clothing must cost $100 or less to qualify for the tax holiday.

Some noneligible articles or accessories of clothing are belt buckles, briefcases, cosmetics, costume masks, handbags, handkerchiefs, jewelry, sewing equipment and supplies, sunglasses, and umbrellas.

Computers costing less than $750 will be eligible for the tax holiday, as will diskettes, compact discs. Handheld electronic schedulers and digital assistants that are not cell phones will be eligible.

Books costing $50 or less will be eligible.

School supplies costing $50 or less will be eligible, including but not limited to binders, blackboard chalk, book bags, calculators, cellophane tape, compasses, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, highlighters, index cards, index card boxes, legal pads, lunch boxes, markers, notebooks, protractors, paper, pencils, pens, rulers, scissors, and writing tablets.
