Greensboro City Council voted to move ahead with an ordinance to rezone property located at 1106 Tuscaloosa Street. The property has been incorrectly labeled as a business for decades, and the current owners were proposing it be zoned as a residence. Mayor J.B. Washington asked if anyone present had any objections to rezoning the property at 1106 Tuscaloosa Street from a business designation to a residential designation. No one objected and Councilmember Bobbie Curtis made a motion to rezone the property as requested. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Katerriaeial Lewis seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.

Councilmember Ashley Kyser asked why the city owes $55,000 to ALDOT after hearing that amount in the readout of the city’s monthly bills. The City Clerk said the money was for a new dump truck that the city is purchasing. “I didn’t know we were buying one,” said Kyser. She said the expenditure was in the city’s 2025 budget and the purchase had already been proposed, seconded, and carried.

Regarding the engineer’s report concerning street and drainage improvements for Ward Street, Centerville Street, and Turner Street, Councilmember Pearl Shepherd said, ”When that man came down and looked at it, he said they were just going to clean it out. For that amount of money, just to clean it out, that doesn’t make any sense. If all they’re going to do is clean it out, we could just let the city workers do it.” Councilmember Lewis asked her to check the engineer’s report and see all that he intended to.

Councilmember Curtis asked if there were going to be any other bids on the drainage project. Mayor Washington said, “This isn’t a bid. We have to vote to approve, then we’ll put it in the paper, then people will make bids.” Curtis made a motion to go forward with the planned renovation. Councilmember Lewis seconded the motion, and it was unanimously carried.

Eliza Lewis from the Big Brother, Big Sister program spoke to the Council and others present. Lewis is a coordinator for the program and said she was there to get the word out. The program is based in Tuscaloosa, and Greensboro is part of the greater Tuscaloosa area. Lewis said her program is looking to branch out in Greensboro and she is looking for any ‘Bigs’(adults) or ‘Littles’ (children) interested in participating in the program, or who otherwise might be a good fit.

Councilmember Shepherd, in her district comments, said a man in her district has complained about a house on his street with unmowed grass reaching nearly to the roof.

A man from District 3 thanked Police Chief Lewis for his efforts in the man’s neighborhood. “I personally want to thank the Chief for handling problems. We got people having fights and drugs everywhere. I want to thank Chief Lewis for making an arrest. I know a lot of people always want to talk bad about the police. And I’ve been guilty of doing that too at times. But I just want to thank you, Chief,” said the man.

The council voted unanimously to adjourn.
